Welcome to IMEL – A Glimpse into Academic Programs, Research, and Campus Life
We were delighted to welcome about 30 students to IMEL for a special information day, held under perfect weather conditions.
Together, we spent a varied and inspiring day in the Harz Mountains, which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone involved. After the welcome, the participants embarked on a diverse program featuring exciting insights into academic studies, research, and life at Clausthal University of Technology. A special highlight was the “Burrito Games,” in which the students competed in teams to see which group could generate the highest profit from selling burritos through smart decisions.
A special focus of the event was the lecture by Prof. Dr. Ani Melkonyan-Gottschalk on the topic of climate and sustainability. She vividly illustrated the challenges and opportunities associated with sustainable transformation and the role economic factors play in this process. The lecture began with a personal and highly motivating account of her own career path, giving the students an authentic insight into the journey to becoming a professor as well as the importance of higher education and continuous learning—especially in the age of AI.
Prof. Dr. Heike Schenk-Mathes’ presentation also offered exciting insights into the topics of investment and financing. Using practical examples, she illustrated how economic decisions are prepared and evaluated. This was complemented by a small experiment in which the participants could get hands-on experience. Here, too, the session began with a personal introduction that demonstrated in an inspiring way just how diverse a university education can be and why it is worthwhile to engage deeply with economic issues.
Student life was not neglected either: Our dedicated student assistants Sara, Hannah, and Sebastian provided a firsthand look at the degree programs at IMEL as well as daily life at Clausthal University of Technology and answered numerous questions.
At lunchtime, everyone headed to the cafeteria together, where they could refuel and chat before the program continued in the afternoon.
Svenja Schachten, Executive Director of IMEL, sums up the day as thoroughly positive:
“It was an all-around successful day for the students. We were very pleased to welcome you to IMEL and hope that you were able to gain many new insights.”
A heartfelt thank you goes to everyone involved who helped plan, organize, and carry out this day and contributed to the event’s success.
