Research on the circular economy and public welfare economics at OTH Amberg presented at ECGIC 2026
As in previous years, TU Clausthal was represented at the conference this year by the Department of Economics, in particular macroeconomics.
Locally represented Prof. Dr. Roland Menges and Michael Henke the institute at this year’s Economy for the Common Good International Conference (ECGIC 2026), which took place at the East Bavarian Technical University (OTH) Amberg and offered a platform for intensive exchange about sustainable, public welfare-oriented economic models.
In addition to some other exciting lectures from research and practice, we were also able to present our joint paper “Common Good Economy meets Circular Economy”, which was presented on site by Michael Henke. The joint work of Michael Henke, Prof. Dr. Roland Menges and Dr. Michael Hahn is dedicated to the conceptual foundation for a planned, multi-year real laboratory (“Climate Future Lab”). At the interface of science and practice, the transdisciplinary research concept examines how resource-economic approaches of the circular economy can be linked to participatory, economic democratic concepts of the common good economy. The focus is on the extent to which regional participation processes in peripheral rural areas could influence individual behaviour and thus establish more sustainable economic practices. The aim is to implement synergistic cooperation with a network of business, civil society and regional policy.
The multifaceted discussions with the international participants provided valuable impulses for the methodical refinement of our concept and the further design of funding opportunities. In addition to this scientific exchange, the department was also closely involved in the conference: Prof. Dr. Roland Menges accompanied the conference as Coordinator of the Scientific Committee and was held at the constituent meeting of the ECG Scientific Council – together with Prof. Dr. Antoinette Weibel from the University of St. Gallen – elected co-chair of the panel.
