IMEL is developing a facial emotion recognition app with international students
Facial emotion recognition – the identification of human emotions from photographs of faces – is a topical issue in both research and practice, not least due to breakthroughs in the field of artificial intelligence.
The Digital Transformation Management department at IMEL is exploring how an app can be designed for academic purposes that meets the needs of professional users. As part of a digitalisation project for the Digital Technologies degree programme (link), a team of six international students from India (Mansi Hiteshkumar Madhvani, Raj Sanjaykumar Chanchad, Miten Shaileshbhai Gabani, Keval Kishorbhai Ramani, Dhruv Shekhpara and Bhargavkumar Hiteshbhai Vadodariya) developed such an app for IMEL as part of a digitalisation project for the Digital Technologies degree programme (Link). Their supervisor, Prof. Dr Thomas Niemand from IMEL, is absolutely delighted: “I would never have expected them to develop such a professional and fully functional app in just three months. My utmost respect and thanks go to the team.” “I am particularly impressed that the students have transformed a scientific research question into a concrete digital application. The app provides a valuable basis for the structured analysis of emotional features from image data.”
Relieved and proud of their achievement, the team presented the app on 3 July 2026 at the final review party at the Centre for Digital Technologies in Goslar.
